I created a poll last October: Do you have a data grid?
I removed it in July after creating two new polls, but here are the results.
The choices:
- Yes, JBoss Data Grid
- Yes, Oracle Coherence
- Yes, Other
- No, Looking
- No, Not Looking
There were 297 responses.
Thoughts
I was glad to see that 37% of the respondents had a data grid.
I was glad to see that 17% of the respondents had JBoss Data Grid. However, this is a Red Hat JBoss product oriented blog.
That being said, I was glad to see that 20% of the respondents did not have JBoss Data Grid as one of my goals is market penetration: to increase the market share of JDG.
In addition, I was glad to see that 24% of the respondents were interested in a data grid as one of my goals is to increase mind share of data grids.
Future
The reality is that data grids are converging with NoSQL, Big Data, and messaging. As a result, both the business value and the technical value of data grids is increasing. The number of use cases is increasing:
- A data grid on top of a database.
- A data grid as an alternative to a database.
- A data grid on top of a NoSQL implementation.
- A data grid as a Big Data platform.
- A data grid next to a Big Data platform.
I think that data grids will play a large role in Big Data solutions with respect to near real-time analysis.
The future is distributed. The future is in memory.
